O'Neill, Sir Phelim
O'Neill, Sir Phelim (c.1605–1653), leader of the rising of 1641. As MP for Dungannon, Phelim sat on a number of parliamentary committees, but in late summer 1641, disenchanted with constitutional methods of resisting further repression of Catholics, he joined the plotting of Rory O'More and Conor Maguire. On the night of 22 October he surprised Charlemont fort by the ruse of inviting himself to dinner with Lord Caulfield. O'Neill made clever use of a forged royal commission, ancient prophecies, and kinship networks to legitimize his struggle and galvanize supporters. He proved unable to prevent the murder of settlers; including Lord Caulfield.
The rebellion soon faltered. Phelim was repulsed at Lisburn in November, had to break off the siege of Drogheda in April 1642, and retained only Charlemont by June. In August 1642 Owen Roe O'Neill arrived from the Continent and took over command. Phelim in turn sought a marriage alliance with Thomas Preston, Owen's rival and a fellow supporter of the Ormond peace. Phelim surrendered Charlemont in August 1650 and fled to an island hide‐out in Tyrone which was eventually betrayed in February 1653. At his trial, much to the chagrin of the Cromwellian judges, he admitted the forgery of the royal commission, thereby forfeiting any chance of escaping execution. Hiram Morgan |

O'Neill, Sir Phelim
O'Neill, Sir Phelim (c.1604–53). O'Neill was one of the commanders of the Irish rebels or Confederation. In 1641 he captured Charlemont castle on the Blackwater and was put in charge of the army of the Ulster rebels. He claimed to be acting on behalf of Charles I but had great difficulty in maintaining his position until assisted by the arrival of Owen Roe O'Neill, with whom he subsequently quarrelled. He continued to fight for the Confederation and took part in the victory at Benburb in 1646, but was forced to capitulate to parliamentary forces in 1650. He failed to make good his escape and was put on trial in 1653. Refusing to purchase a pardon by implicating Charles I, he was executed in Dublin as a traitor.
