Sir Peter Blake

Blake, Sir Peter

Blake, Sir Peter (1948–2001), yachtsman turned environmentalist. Blake, a New Zealander, was the only man to have won the Whitbread (now Volvo) Round-the-World Race (see yachting: round-the-world competitions) and the America's Cup, and he also held the Jules Verne Trophy for the fastest non-stop crewed circumnavigation under sail. In 1995 he headed Team New Zealand's challenge for the America's Cup and its boat, Black Magic, won. For this feat he was knighted and he led the successful New Zealand cup defender team in 2000. He then decided to give up competitive sailing and founded Blake Expeditions to sail to those areas considered vital to the world's ecosystem. He was appointed special ambassador to the United Nations Environmental Programme and was visiting the Amazon River as part of a two-month expedition to monitor the effects of pollution when he was shot aboard his yacht, a victim of piracy.
