Sir James Melville 1535-1617, Scottish diplomat. He was a page to Mary Queen of Scots in France and, after her return to Scotland, was employed as Mary's representative at the court of Elizabeth I of England. He later performed important diplomatic missions for James VI. His memoirs, written after James's accession (1603) to the English throne (as James I) and first published in 1683, are one of the principal sources for the history of the period.

Bibliography: See edition by A. F. Steuart (1929).

Melville, Andrew (1545–1622), Scottish Presbyterian theologian. He held senior positions in the universities of Glasgow and St Andrews; his educational reforms were of some importance. He also took an active part in attacking what was left of the Scottish episcopal system, and in 1575 he was entrusted with drawing up the Second Book of Discipline (q.v.). As Moderator of the General Assembly in 1582, he prosecuted R. Montgomery, one of the ‘tulchan’ bishops. On this and other occasions he incurred the hostility of James I. He was confined to the Tower in 1607, but released in 1611 on being offered a professorial chair at Sedan.
