Melville, Andrew
Melville, Andrew (1545–1622), Scottish Presbyterian theologian. He held senior positions in the universities of Glasgow and St Andrews; his educational reforms were of some importance. He also took an active part in attacking what was left of the Scottish episcopal system, and in 1575 he was entrusted with drawing up the Second Book of Discipline (q.v.). As Moderator of the General Assembly in 1582, he prosecuted R. Montgomery, one of the ‘tulchan’ bishops. On this and other occasions he incurred the hostility of James I. He was confined to the Tower in 1607, but released in 1611 on being offered a professorial chair at Sedan.
