Sir Francis Beaumont

Beaumont, Sir Francis

Beaumont, Sir Francis (1584–1616), English dramatist, whose name is so closely associated with that of John Fletcher that they are usually spoken of in one breath, while scholars are still disentangling their separate contributions, and those of most of their playwright contemporaries, from the more than 50 plays which once passed under their joint names. Even Beaumont's first play, The Woman Hater (c.1605), once believed to be his own, is now assigned partly to Fletcher. It is however still believed that The Knight of the Burning Pestle (1607), a lively comedy which satirizes the romantic-historical plays popular at the time, and gives amusing glimpses of a contemporary audience in action, is by Beaumont alone. He ceased to write for the stage on his marriage in 1613, though he still contributed occasionally to entertainments seen at Court.
