Ferumbras, Sir
Ferumbras, Sir or Firumbras, Sir, a Middle English metrical romance of 10,540 short lines related to the French Charlemagne romances Fierabras and the Destruccion de Rome. It is one of the more artistic of the English romances of ‘The Matter of France’. The story tells of the capture by Ferumbras, the son of the Sultan of Babylon, of Rome and the Holy Relics, of his combat with Oliver, and of the conversion to Christianity of Ferumbras and his sister Floripas. The two become friends of Roland, Oliver, and Charlemagne. The same story is told in The Sowdone of Babylon, a version from about 1400 of a lost French romance.
