Quiller-Couch, Sir Arthur Thomas

Quiller-Couch, Sir Arthur Thomas (1863–1944), wrote under the pseudonym ‘Q’. He was knighted in 1910 and became professor of English at Cambridge in 1912. His prolific literary career opened with the publication of a novel of adventure, Dead Man's Rock (1887). In 1900 he edited the first Oxford Book of English Verse. Two volumes of lectures, On the Art of Writing and On the Art of Reading, appeared in 1916 and 1920, and his edition of the New Cambridge Shakespeare began to appear in 1921. In 1928 his collected novels and stories appeared in 30 volumes.

Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch

Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch , pseud. Q, 1863–1944, English author. Among the novels of his native Cornwall are Dead Man's Rock (1887) and Hetty Wesley (1903), which are romantic in spirit yet distinguished for their clear and colorful style. He also wrote essays, lectures, and poetry and was the editor of many anthologies, including the Oxford Book of English Verse (1900) and the Oxford Book of English Prose (1923). He was knighted in 1910.
