Simon
Simon Several men in the NT bear this name, taken perhaps from Simon Maccabaeus (142–134 BCE). (1) Simon Peter, leader of the Twelve (Mark 3: 16). (2) Another member of the Twelve, ‘the Zealot’ (Luke 6: 15). (3) A brother of Jesus (Mark 6: 3). (4) A leper in Bethany (Mark 14: 3–9). (5) A Pharisee (Luke 7: 36–50). (6)A man from Cyrene who, on entering Jerusalem, was conscripted to carry Jesus' cross (Mark 15: 21). (7) Simon Magus Magus (Acts 8: 9 ff.). (8) A tanner in Joppa with whom Peter lodged (Acts 9: 43).
