Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique
Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) A Franco–German–Spanish organization for millimetre-wave astronomy, with its headquarters in Grenoble, France. It operates instruments in France and Spain. The IRAM 30-m Telescope was opened in 1985 at an altitude of 2870 m on Pico Veleta, in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Grenada in southern Spain. The IRAM Interferometer is situated on the Plateau de Bure, at an altitude of 2550 m in the French Alps 90 km south of Grenoble. It consists of six 15-m antennas movable on tracks arranged in a T-shape giving baselines up to 760 m. The interferometer was opened in 1990 with three dishes and expanded to six in 1996. IRAM is owned and operated by the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, the German Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, and the Spanish Instituto Geográfico Nacional. http://www.iram.fr/

Sierra Nevada de Mérida
Sierra Nevada de Mérida , mountain range, NW Venezuela, a spur of the Andes extending c.200 mi (320 km) NE from the Colombian border to the Caribbean coastal range. From 30 to 50 mi (48–80 km) wide, it rises between the Orinoco llanos and Maracaibo lowlands to perpetually snowcapped peaks. Pico Bolívar (c.16,420 ft/5,000 m high) is the highest point in Venezuela. Coffee is raised in the Mérida. |
