Shymkent
Shymkent, Kazakhstan Chimkent ‘Turf Town’, thus a town built on a grassy area from shym ‘grass’ and kent ‘town’. Founded in the 7th century as a staging post on the Silk Road and developed as a frontier fort of the Kokand Khanate; it was captured by the Russians in 1864 and remained in Russian/Soviet hands until Kazakhstan gained its independence in 1991. At this time the Kazakh spelling was adopted.

Shymkent
Shymkent or Chimkent , city (1993 est. pop. 404,000), S Kazakhstan, on the Turkistan-Siberia RR. It has large zinc and lead smelters and machine, chemical, and food-processing industries. Founded in the 12th cent., Shymkent was a Kokand fortress before it was taken by Russia in 1864. |
