Sherman

Sherman ♂ Transferred use of the surname, which is an occupational name for someone who trimmed the nap of woollen cloth after it had been woven, from Old English scēara ‘shears’ + mann ‘man’. In the United States it is sometimes bestowed in honour of the Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman (1820–71).

Sherman, USA 1. New York: named after Roger Sherman (1721–93), a politician and one of the men who signed the American Declaration of Independence in 1776.2. Texas: founded in the 1840s and named after General Sidney Sherman (1805–73), a cavalry officer who was prominent during the Texan Revolt against the Mexicans in 1835–6.

Sherman

Sherman city (1990 pop. 31,601), seat of Grayson co., N Tex., near the Red River; inc. 1858. Originally on a stagecoach route, it is a highway and railroad junction. Manufactures include electronic equipment, processed foods, military equipment, and metal products. Austin College is in Sherman.
