Shelton, Frederick William
Shelton, Frederick William (1815–81),Episcopal clergyman of New York, was also an author. The Trollopiad; or, Travelling Gentlemen in America (1837) is a verse satire on Mrs. Trollope, Captain Basil Hall, and other English critics of American life. Up the River (1853) is a series of letters on the New York countryside, while Peeps from a Belfry; or, The Parish Sketch Book (1855) is a description of a winter in Vermont. Both show his indebtedness to Irving, as do many of his magazine tales and essays. Salander and the Dragon, a Romance of The Hartz Prison (1850) is an allegory in the vein of Pilgrim's Progress, and The Rector of St. Bardolph's (1853) is a story of a country parson.

Shelton, Henry
Shelton, Henry (1942?–) chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The North Carolinian entered the army in 1963 and served two tours in the Vietnam War. From 1987 to 1989 he was deputy operations chief for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and during the Persian Gulf War (1991), with the rank of brigadier general, he helped lead the 101st Airborne's deployment. In 1994, as Joint Task Force Commander, he oversaw the U.S. invasion of Haiti; two years later he became head of U.S. Special Operations, headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. In 1997 President Bill Clinton nominated him to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; he was confirmed on September 16.

Shelton city (1990 pop. 35,418), Fairfield co., SW Conn., on the Housatonic River opposite Derby; settled 1697, set off from Stratford 1789, inc. as a city 1915. Metal products, furniture, and electronic equipment are among the city's manufactures. |
