Shawfield riots
Shawfield riots, 1725. After the Union of 1707 taxation policy remained a delicate matter in Scotland. The imposition of the malt tax on Scotland by exasperated Tories in 1712 provoked a determined attempt at repeal of the Union and it was not levied. In 1724 a move to raise revenue by 3 pence on every bushel of malt, though half the rate in England, provoked severe riots in Glasgow. Shawfield, the home of Daniel Campbell, MP for Glasgow Burghs, was plundered. One result was that Roxburgh, secretary of state [S], was dismissed and henceforward Walpole relied upon the earl of Islay (Argyll).
