Sharpeville Massacre

Sharpeville Massacre

Sharpeville Massacre (21 Mar. 1960) A massacre caused by the police opening fire on demonstrators from the PAC in the Black township of Sharpeville (near Vereeniging, Transvaal), in which sixty-nine people were killed and 186 injured. It came to symbolize the repressive nature of the White regime, triggering large-scale protests from the PAC and ANC. At the same time, it allowed the White apartheid regime to tighten its grip on the country through increased repression, declaring a state of emergency and outlawing both the PAC and the ANC. This almost destroyed Black nationalist opposition in the subsequent decade, while the ‘stability’ thus imposed heralded a period of unequalled economic growth.

Sharpeville massacre

Sharpeville massacre (21 March 1960) An incident in the South African township of Sharpeville. The police opened fire on a demonstration against APARTHEID laws, killing 67 Africans, and wounding 180. There was widespread international condemnation, and a state of emergency was declared in South Africa. 1700 persons were detained, and the political parties, the AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS and Pan-Africanist Congress were banned. Three weeks later a White farmer attempted to assassinate the Prime Minister, VERWOERD, and, as pressure from the Commonwealth against the apartheid policies mounted, South Africa became a republic and withdrew from the Commonwealth (1961).
