Sharon
Sharon ♀ From a biblical place name. The derivation is from the phrase ‘I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys’ (Song of Solomon 2:1). The plant name ‘rose of Sharon’ is used for a shrub of the genus Hypericum, with yellow flowers, and for a species of hibiscus, with purple flowers. Sharon is recorded in the United States from the 18th century, as a name of both boys and girls. Since the 20th century, however, it has been used predominantly if not exclusively for girls.

Sharon , plain between the Samarian Hills of central Israel and the Mediterranean Sea, extending c.50 mi (80 km) from Jaffa to Caesarea, and mentioned several times in the Bible. See also rose of Sharon . Famous for its fertility in ancient times, Sharon later became swampland. In the early 20th cent., Zionist pioneers transformed it into farmlands with many settlements. |

Sharon , city (1990 pop. 17,493), Mercer co., NW Pa., on the Shenango River, near the Ohio line; settled c.1800, inc. as a city 1920. An industrial city, its chief manufactures are textiles, foods, plastic and steel products, and electronic goods. The Shenango campus of Pennsylvania State Univ. is there. Shenango Dam and Reservoir (completed 1965) are nearby. |
