Sharon , plain between the Samarian Hills of central Israel and the Mediterranean Sea, extending c.50 mi (80 km) from Jaffa to Caesarea, and mentioned several times in the Bible. See also rose of Sharon . Famous for its fertility in ancient times, Sharon later became swampland. In the early 20th cent., Zionist pioneers transformed it into farmlands with many settlements.
