Shaoyang
Shaoyang, Hunan/China Zhaoling, Shaoling, Shaozhou, Baoqing Lying at the confluence of the Zi and Shao Rivers, the name was changed to Shaoling after one of the rivers in the 3rd century to avoid use of the character zhāo which was the emperor's personal name. In 636 it was renamed Shaozhou and in 1225 the Baoqing Prefecture during the first year of Emperor Baoqing's reign (1225–8). It was renamed Shaoyang County in 1928 and in 1950 this was divided into Shaoyang County and Shaoyang City. Shao may be a personal name with yáng here meaning ‘north bank (of the River Shao)’.

Shaoyang
Shaoyang , city (1994 est. pop. 277,300), S Hunan prov., China. It is a trade center for the upper Zi valley. Light and heavy industries, including textiles, paper, and chemicals, are the largest sectors of the economy. |
