Shan Van Vocht
Shan Van Vocht. Anglicized spelling for Sean-bhean Bhocht [Ir., the poor old woman], a personification of Ireland current in the 18th century, perhaps derived from the Cailleach Bhéire. A song titled ‘Shan Van Vocht’, dated from the rising of the United Irishmen, 1798, has been described as the ‘Marseillaise’ of Ireland.

Shan Van Vocht one of the names of Ireland conceived as a feminine entity (‘the little old woman’), and used as the title of a nationalist song of 1798. Also called Sean Bhean Bhocht.
