Shamokin
Shamokin, Pennsylvania/USA Boyd's Stone‐Coal Quarry, Boydtown, New Town Founded in 1835 by two coal speculators, one of whom was John C. Boyd, it was renamed at his suggestion from a Delaware word schahamoki ‘place of eels’ or ‘place of horns’.

Shamokin , city (1990 pop. 9,184), Northumberland co., E Pa.; settled c.1835, inc. 1864. A mining center for anthracite coal, Shamokin lies in an area of declining industry and mineral production. Agriculture products include corn, hay, and dairy items. |
