Senegambia

Concise Dictionary of World Place-Names | 2005 | | © Concise Dictionary of World Place-Names 2005, originally published by Oxford University Press 2005. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Senegambia A confederation that merged Senegal (once an Overseas Territory of France) and the Gambia (once a British protectorate) in 1982. Apart from its Atlantic coast, The Gambia is entirely surrounded by Senegal. Gambian fears of absorption into Senegal brought the confederation to an end in 1989.
