Selene
Selene A Japanese Moon probe, planned for launch in 2007; the name is short for Selenological and Engineering Explorer. Selene will go into polar orbit around the Moon, releasing a small relay satellite, VRAD (short for VLBI radio), to provide a link to Earth when the orbiter is behind the Moon, and another satellite that will measure the gravitational field of the Moon. Selene itself will carry 13 instruments including imagers, a radar sounder, laser altimeter, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, and gamma-ray spectrometer to study the origin, evolution, and tectonics of the Moon from orbit.

Selene
Selene in Greek mythology, the goddess of the moon, identified with Artemis. She fell in love with Endymion and asked Zeus to grant him a wish. Endymion chose immortality and eternal youth, which Zeus granted, but only on condition that Endymion remain forever asleep. In another story, Selene visited Endymion nightly as he lay asleep, and bore him fifty daughters.

Selene
Selene , in Greek mythology and mythology, moon goddess; daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia and sister of the sun god Helios. There was no known moon cult among the Greeks, but Selene was a significant figure in Greek poetry and sorcery and was often identified with Hecate and Artemis. |

Selene In Greek mythology, goddess of the Moon, daughter of Hyperion and sister of Helios (the Sun) and Eos (the Dawn). Each night, she drove her chariot across the sky, as her brother Helios, the Sun god, had done during the day.
