Schools Act (Scotland)

Schools Act (Scotland), 1696. In 1616 the Scottish Privy Council decreed that in Scotland a school should be established in every parish. This was ratified by the Scottish Parliament in 1633 and a further Act for Founding Schools passed in 1646. These statutes were re-enacted by the Scottish Parliament in an Act for Settling Schools in 1696. A uniform system of parish schools came into being; the salary of the schoolmaster was paid by the heritors (landowners) and the schools were supported out of the rates. It was a further 200 years before a similar system was established in England.
