Satyre Ménippée
Satyre Ménippée or Satire Ménippée , anonymous French political pamphlet (1st ed. 1594) circulated in Paris in the 1590s. A brilliant lampoon attacking the leaders of the League at the 1593 States-General, it helped sway Parisian opinion to the side of Henry IV. A canon, Le Roy, had the principal part in writing it. The title of the lampoon derives from Saturae Menippeae, lost work of Varro based on satires by the Greek cynic Menippus. |
