Whitman, Sarah Helen (Power)

Whitman, Sarah Helen [Power] (1803–78), Rhode Island poet, after the death of her husband became engaged to Poe (c. 1848). Several of her poems concern him and more bear the obvious influence of his style. Some of her verse is collected in Hours of Life (1853), and a complete edition appeared posthumously (1879). She defended Poe against Griswold and others in Edgar Poe and His Critics (1860). The second of Poe's poems entitled To Helen was addressed to her, and his Last Letters to her were published in 1909.

Sarah Helen (Power) Whitman 1803-78, American poet, b. Providence, R.I. In 1828 she married a Boston lawyer, John W. Whitman; after his death (1833) she returned to Providence and devoted herself to writing. In 1848 she was engaged for a time to Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote the second of his two poems entitled "To Helen" about her. She wrote several poems about Poe and defended him in Edgar Poe and His Critics (1860). Her collected poems, Hours of Life, appeared in 1853 (enl. ed. 1879).
