Santiago , city (1990 pop. 60,959), W central Panama. Santiago is a communications and commercial center in the Pacific lowlands. It is a provincial and district capital.

Santiago, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Philippines Chile: founded in 1541 as Santiago del Nuevo Extremo ‘Santiago of the New Frontier’ by a Spanish conquistador after the apostle St James the Great (in Spanish, Santo Iago). It has been the capital of Chile since 1818.
