Santarém
Santarém, Brazil, Portugal 1. Brazil (Pará): founded in 1661 as a Jesuit mission to a Tapajó community, hence its first name of Tapajós. It was renamed after St Irene (Santa Iria) when it became a town in 1758.2. Portugal: the Roman town had the original name of Scalabis before Julius Caesar† renamed it Praesidium Julium. Its present name honours St Irene, a nun martyred in 653, to whom the town was dedicated by a Visigoth king who had converted to Christianity. Her body was allegedly thrown into the River Tagus and was washed ashore at this point. With the arrival of the Moors, the town was renamed Shantariyah and Shantarīn, versions that also commemorated St Irene.
