Sandakan
Sandakan, Sabah/Malaysia Elopura Founded in 1879 by William Clarke Cowie who moved his base, called Sandakan, here. He named it Elopura ‘Beautiful City’ in recognition of the beautiful natural harbour. It was subsequently renamed Sandakan ‘Place that was pawned’ from the Suluk sanda ‘to pawn’ and kan, a suffix. Who pawned it, to whom, and why, is not known.

Sandakan
Sandakan , city (1991 pop. 157,180), Sabah, Malaysia, on N Borneo, on Sandakan Harbor, an inlet of the Sulu Sea. It is the trade hub for an agricultural and lumbering region. Sandakan was the capital of British North Borneo (now Sabah) until 1947, when it was supplanted by Kota Kinabalu (Jesselton). |
