San Marino, and USA The Republic of San Marino, also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino (Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino). Named after a Christian stonemason and later saint, Marinus, who is alleged to have fled Dalmatia to escape persecution by Diocletian (245–316), Roman emperor (284–305), and who founded a hermitage on Mount Titano. Although surrounded by Italian territory, San Marino claims to be the world's oldest republic, dating from 301. However, the first evidence of independence dates only from 885 (the Montefeltro Decree) since when sovereignty has been maintained.
