Samara
Samara, Russia Kuybyshev A province and a city founded as a fortified settlement named Samara in 1586. It lies at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers from which it takes its name. The meaning of that name is unknown, although it has been suggested that it might be of Kyrgyz origin and mean ‘Hollow One’. In 1935–91 it was named after Valerian Kuybyshev†, a Bolshevik agitator who returned from exile to the city in 1917 and then led an uprising here. The city was the seat of the Soviet government in 1941–3.
