Salamis

Salamis island, E Greece, in the Saronic Gulf, W of Athens. It early belonged to Aegina but was later under Athenian control, except for a brief period after it was occupied (c.600 BC) by Megara. In the Persian Wars the allied Greek fleet, led by Themistocles , decisively defeated (480 BC) the Persians off Salamis.

Salamis

Salamis an island in the Saronic Gulf in Greece, to the west of Athens. The strait between the island and the mainland was the scene in 480 bc of a crushing defeat of the Persian fleet under Xerxes I by the Greeks under Themistocles.
