Sakha
Sakha, Russia Yakutiya A republic, formerly known as the Yakut Province and named after the Yakuts. Their name may be from the Evenki yeko with the plural yekot ‘outsiders’ or ‘strangers’, a reference to the fact that they were not Evenki. To the Buryats they were Yakhuud which became Yakut in Russian. Sakha ‘people of the edge’ is what the Yakuts call themselves, an acknowledgement that they lived at the edge of the world known to the Evenki.
