Sakai

Sakai, Honshū/Japan Three places and a river. In Ōsaka Urban Prefecture and in Ibaraki Prefecture Sakai has different Chinese characters but both mean ‘Border’, both being on administrative borders. The Sakai in Fukui Prefecture has Chinese characters saka ‘hill’ and i ‘well’. There is also a river with this name that flows between the Tōkyō Metropolis and Kanagawa Prefecture.

Sakai

Sakai , city (1990 pop. 807,765), Osaka prefecture, S Honshu, Japan, on Osaka Bay at the mouth of the Yamato River. An industrial center, it has engineering, iron- and steelworks, chemical plants, machine factories, and textile mills. Sakai was a major port from the 15th to the 17th cent.
