Saint Thomas island (2000 pop. 51,181), 32 sq mi (83 sq km), one of the U.S. Virgin Islands , West Indies. Charlotte Amalie , the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and a campus of the Univ. of the Virgin Islands are on Saint Thomas. Tourism is the main economic activity.

Saint Thomas, Canada, USA, US Virgin Islands 1. Canada (Ontario): founded as Sterling in 1817, it was renamed after Colonel Thomas Talbot (1771–1853), because he made it the capital of the settlement he had founded in 1803.2. US Virgin Islands: the main island of the group sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named by him after St Thomas, the 1st‐century apostle. Colonized first by the Dutch from 1657, it later became Danish and British before being bought by the USA in 1917.
