Joseph of Volokolamsk, St
Joseph of Volokolamsk, St (1439/40–1515), Russian monastic reformer. After some years of monastic life, he instituted a strict reform and founded the monastery of Volokolamsk, near Moscow. Unlike Nil Sorsky, he welcomed gifts, and he created a large community with a rigorous life of obedience, work, and lengthy liturgical services. Feast day, 9 Sept.
