Jane Frances de Chantal, St
Jane Frances de Chantal, St (1572–1641), foundress of the Order of the Visitation. On the death of her husband in 1601, she took a vow of chastity. With the help of St Francis de Sales (her spiritual director), she founded the first house of the Visitation at Annecy in 1610. Leaving her 14-year-old son, she joined the Order and spent the rest of her life organizing it. Feast day, 12 Dec. (formerly, 21 Aug.).
