Helena, St
Helena, St (c.255–c.330), also Helen, mother of the Emp. Constantine. Abandoned by her husband, she was accorded a position of honour on Constantine's accession. She zealously supported the Christian cause. In 326 she visited the Holy Land, where she founded basilicas on the Mount of Olives and at Bethlehem. According to later tradition she discovered the Cross on which Christ was crucified. Feast day in the W., formerly 18 Aug.; in the E. and in CW, 21 May.

Helena, St
Helena, St (c.255–c.330 AD) Roman empress and mother of Constantine the Great. She was a convert to Christianity and in 326 visited the Holy Land, where she founded basilicas on the Mount of Olives and at Bethlehem. Later tradition ascribes to her the finding of the cross on which Christ was crucified.

Saint Helena
Saint Helena , c.248–328?, mother of Constantine I. She became a Christian in 313. According to tradition she found (327) the relic of the True Cross in Jerusalem and identified the location of the Holy Sepulcher. Feast: Aug. 18. |
