Sainete
Sainete, name given in 17th-century Spain to a short comic scene played between the acts of a serious full-length play. Originally it resembled the paso and the entremés, but later differed from them by its greater use of music, its diversity of scenes and characters from city life, and a hint of social criticism in its racy dialogue. The great writer of sainetes in the 18th century was Ramón de la Cruz, but the genre lives on, and can be found in the works of such modern writers as Carlos Arniches and the Álvarez Quintero brothers. With the one-act zarzuela, the sainete forms part of the género chico.
