Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden, England/UK Wealadene, Waledana, Saffornewalden Originally ‘Valley of the Britons’ from the Old English walh ‘Briton’ or ‘Welshmen’ and denu ‘valley’. The Middle English safron ‘Saffron’ was added later to distinguish this particular Walden and to acknowledge the importance of the saffron crocus that was reintroduced and cultivated here from c.1400; the purple‐flowering plants were used to make a dye for the weaving industry in the area.
