Sacagawea
Sacagawea (c.1787–1812?),Shoshone squaw, was married (c.1800) to the French‐Canadian trader Toussaint Charbonneau, with whom she accompanied the Lewis and Clark expedition, proving valuable as interpreter, peacemaker with the Shoshone, and guide over the Great Divide. Under her own name, which is variously spelled, or the nickname “The Bird Woman,” she is frequently mentioned by early travelers, with praise for her character and services. She also appears in fiction, as in Emerson Hough's The Magnificent Adventure.
