Leamington Spa
Leamington Spa, England/UK Lamintone The formal name is Royal Leamington Spa. Leamington means ‘Farm on the (River) Leam’ from tūn; Leam is a Celtic river name meaning ‘elm river’ or ‘marshy river’. Spa refers to the medicinal springs here and it was to these that Princess (later Queen) Victoria† came in 1830, granting the title of ‘Royal’ in 1838, the year of her coronation. The town developed from the village of Leamington Priors with the discovery of saline springs.
