Royal Exchange
Royal Exchange (now City Hall), Dublin, built by the English architect Thomas Cooley (1740–84), who won an open competition for the design of the building in 1768. It was completed within ten years of its commission, and was one of the earliest Irish expressions of the neoclassical style. It occupied a small but well‐positioned site, forming the vista for the southern end of the newly built Parliament Street. The centre of the building is filled by a large domed and colonnaded rotunda, designed as a meeting place for Dublin's merchants. In 1852 it became the headquarters of Dublin corporation.
