Ross Island in the Ross Sea , Antarctica , on the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf. Part of the Ross Dependency, the island is separated from Victoria Land by McMurdo Sound. Mt. Erebus , an active volcano, and Mt. Terror are on the island.

Ross, Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA Antarctica: the Ross Dependency, Ross Ice Shelf, Ross Island, and Ross Sea are all named after the Scottish polar explorer and naval officer, Sir James Ross (1800–62), who carried out an expedition to the Antarctic in 1839–43.
