Ross
Ross ♂ Either an adoption of the Gaelic topographic term ros ‘headland’ (compare Glen, Kyle) or a transferred use of the Scottish surname, which is borne by a large and ancient family whose members have played a major role in Scottish history. Although still very popular in Scotland, the name is now in widespread general use.

Ross, Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA Antarctica: the Ross Dependency, Ross Ice Shelf, Ross Island, and Ross Sea are all named after the Scottish polar explorer and naval officer, Sir James Ross (1800–62), who carried out an expedition to the Antarctic in 1839–43.
