Rochdale

Rochdale, UK, USA UK (England): formerly Recedham, Rachedham, and Rachedal ‘Valley of the (River) Roch’ from the river name and the Old Scandinavian dalr ‘valley’. The river's name, originally Rached, is a back‐formation from Recedham ‘Homestead with a Hall’ from the Old English reced ‘hall’ and hām. The river valley became known as Rached‐dale and then Rachedale; and eventually Rochdale appeared as the name of the town.
