Robert Holcot

Holcot, Robert

Holcot, Robert (d. 1349), Scholastic theologian. He entered the Dominican Order and studied and taught at Oxford. By 1343 he had been transferred to Northampton, where he is said to have died nursing the sick during the plague. His commentary on the Sentences circulated widely. Working in Oxford at a time when the impact of William of Ockham was fresh and it was difficult to maintain that a fully demonstrable proof could be found for God's existence or His creation of the world, Holcot was reduced to saying that God communicates to men of goodwill sufficient knowledge of Himself for salvation. In his biblical commentaries the main emphasis is on the application of the text for preaching.

Holcot, Robert

Holcot, Robert (d. 1349), a Dominican who was theologically a follower of Ockham in his insistence on human free will, in opposition to his contemporary Bradwardine. The canon of his works is large but uncertain; his most important work is his Moralitates Historiarum, a series of metaphorical stories which influenced the Gesta Romanorum. Throughout his work he alluded to and used ‘pictures’, metaphorical representations of abstract phenomena, in a lively and literary way.
