Aske, Robert
Aske, Robert (d. 1537). A Lincolnshire attorney, Aske led the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536–7, a rising against the dissolution of the monasteries and in favour of the old religion. An outbreak in Lincolnshire was followed by Aske's Yorkshire rising, strong enough to persuade Henry VIII to offer pardons and agree in November 1536 to grant Aske an audience. But after renewed activity in January 1537, Aske was seized, and in July executed in York. A moderate who had tried to restrain his followers and urged them to trust Henry's good faith, Aske paid with his life for such naïvety.
