Roanoke, USA 1. An island off the coast of North Carolina, a river rising in Virginia and flowing through North Carolina into the Atlantic, and five cities have this name which is said to be an Algonquian word meaning a ‘place where shells are found’ or a ‘place where shells are used for money’. Also in North Carolina is a city called Roanoke Rapids.2. Virginia: settled in 1740 it was given the name Big Lick in 1874 before being renamed Roanoke in 1882.
