Rita Angus

Angus, Rita

Angus, Rita (1908–1970). New Zealand painter, mainly of portraits and landscapes. Angus was born at Hastings, near Napier, and studied at Canterbury School of Art, Christchurch, 1927–31. She was considered one of the leading figures in New Zealand art, particularly in the 1940s, and with Colin McCahon and Toss Woollaston she was a pioneer of modernism in her country. Working in both oils and watercolours, she painted in a forthright, brightly coloured style. She also painted under her married name, Rita Cook. The National Art Gallery, Wellington, has the best collection of her work.

Angus, Rita (b Hastings, 12 Mar. 1908; d Wellington, 26 Jan. 1970). New Zealand painter, mainly of portraits and landscapes. Alongside Colin McCahon and Toss Woollaston she is considered one of the leading figures in New Zealand art of her time. Working in both oils and watercolours, she painted in a forthright, brightly coloured style that won her a reputation as a pioneer of modernism in her country. She also painted under her married name, Rita Cook.
