Rio Grande, Brazil, North America 1. Brazil: a river and a city‐port founded in 1737. Brazil has two states called Rio Grande do Norte ‘Big River of the North’ and Rio Grande do Sul ‘Big River of the South’.2. North America: a river which forms a large part of the border between the USA and Mexico. Its Spanish name means simply ‘Big River’ while in Mexico it is known as the Río Bravo ‘Wild River’.
