Rinaldo

Rinaldo

Rinaldo, or Renaud, first figures under the latter name in the Charlemagne cycle of legends as the eldest of the Four Sons of Aymon, who were first the enemies of Charlemagne but later pardoned on condition that Renaud goes to Palestine to fight the Saracens and surrenders his horse Bayard. Renaud complies and becomes a hermit in Palestine; but Bayard will allow no one else to mount him. As Rinaldo, he figures in Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato, Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, and Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata: in the first two as the cousin of Orlando and the suitor of Angelica; in the third as a prince of Esta, the lover of Armida and the victor in the battle for Jerusalem.
