Ridley
Ridley ♂ Transferred use of the surname, in origin a local name from any of various places so named. Those in Essex and Kent are from Old English hrēod ‘reeds’ + lēah ‘wood, clearing’. The two in Cheshire and Northumberland are from rydde ‘cleared land’ + lēah. The given name may have been chosen in some cases by ardent Protestants in honour of Bishop Nicholas Ridley (?1500–55), burned at the stake for his Protestantism under Mary Tudor. More recently it has been associated with the film director Ridley Scott (b. 1973).
