Johnson, Richard W. (1827–97) Union army officer born near Smithland, Kentucky. Johnson failed to achieve distinction in any of his many encounters during the Civil War. His division was routed by Confederates at Stones River (1862–63) and was responsible for turning a potential victory into a defeat at Pickett's Mill (1864) during the Atlanta campaign. His troops performed adequately at Chickamauga (1863) and at Chattanooga (1863); his command of a cavalry division during the defeat of Gen. John B. Hood in Tennessee (1864) was seen as little more than satisfactory.
